Recommended shortcuts: use the Mac screenshot keys

How to move the Mac screenshot shortcuts ⇧⌘3, ⇧⌘4 and ⇧⌘5 over to HiCapture. Capture, edit and record with the keys you already know.

01

What are the recommended shortcuts?

It is a setup where HiCapture takes over the three Mac screenshot shortcuts. ⇧⌘4 starts Area capture, ⇧⌘5 opens Pinned area capture, and ⇧⌘3 opens the Quickslot wheel. Every other mode is picked from the wheel, so there is nothing else to memorize.

  1. Area capture⇧⌘4

Drag, and the area lands on your clipboard.

  2. Pinned area capture⇧⌘5

Leave a frame up to capture the same spot or record it.

  3. Quickslot wheel⇧⌘3

Pick Full screen capture, Window capture, Text extraction, Color picker or Draw on screen from the wheel.

02

How do I turn off the Mac screenshot shortcuts?

If macOS takes these keys first, HiCapture never receives them. Go to System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Screenshots, clear all five checkboxes, then click “Done”.

  1. Open

In System Settings, choose “Keyboard” and click “Keyboard Shortcuts”.

  2. Screenshots

Choose “Screenshots” in the list on the left.

  3. Clear the checkboxes

Clear all five checkboxes and click “Done”.

“Open System Settings” in HiCapture Settings → General opens this screen directly.

03

How do I switch in HiCapture in one go?

Click “Apply” at the top of Settings → Shortcuts. Only the Area capture, Pinned area capture and Quickslot shortcuts stay on; the rest are turned off. Modes that are off still work from the Quickslot wheel, and “Reset to defaults” brings back the original shortcuts.

  1. Open Settings

Open Settings from the HiCapture menu bar icon and choose “Shortcuts”.

  2. Switch in one go

    Click “Apply” and confirm.

  3. Go back

“Reset to defaults” restores the original shortcuts.
